Deep in the heart of central Africa lives a relatively unknown species—the forest elephant. In spite of its size, the forest elephant is difficult to find. Scientists from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s Elephant Listening Project have been recording forest elephant sounds for the last 20 years to find out how elephants use the forest and to save them.

Katy Payne and her team at the Elephant Listening Project blazed the trail for elephant listening studies on the African savanna. The team’s world-famous work is now the subject of Eavesdropping on Elephants: How Listening Helps Conservation by Patricia Newman.

Author Patricia Newman’s award-winning books connect young readers to global communities and conservation: Sea Otter Heroes, a Robert F. Sibert Honor Book; Zoo Scientists to the Rescue, a Bank Street College Best Book; Plastic Ahoy! Investigating the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, a Green Earth Book Award winner; and Neema’s Reason to Smile, winner of a Parents’ Choice Recommended Award.
